Raising A Reader

Read Aloud Tips for Parents
Because parents are their child's first teacher, here are some ideas for having fun with reading aloud to your child:
  • Read your child's favorite books again and again (children love repetition and the familiarity with their favorite stories).
  • Establish a regular routine for reading and sharing books with your child.
  • Try to read aloud stories to your child for at least 10-15 minutes a day - making it a special time to share.
  • Read when your child asks you to.
  • Read anywhere and everywhere!
  • Let your child set the pace for reading.
  • Let your child turn the pages, repeat words and point out alphabet letters.
  • Stop often to talk about the pictures.
  • While reading, stop often to ask, "What do you think will happen next?" or "What is happening in the picture?"
  • Once you finish a book, talk about the story with your child.
  • Sometimes, make up your own story to go with the pictures in the book.
  • Use puppets, songs, lullabies, nursery rhymes to go along with the stories.
