We are trees. Our roots network with the roots of others trees. Our branches grow with desire of touching other branches.

Parent Services Project :: Parent Leadership Institute
Parent Leadership Institute
Parent Leadership Institute Overview
The Parent Leadership Institute is a series of six or eight workshops led by Parent Services Project (PSP), designed to train and support emerging parent leaders in early childhood and school settings as well as other settings that serve children and families. The Institute draws on the universals of family support and community organizing, using an approach that is based on mutual respect, equity, shared power, and recognition of strengths.
What is the Purpose of a Parent Leadership Institute?
PSP believes that the family is a child's first teacher and a constant in their lives. The Parent Leadership Institute supports parents to be fully engaged in the systems serving their children, and provides parents with skills to take on greater leadership roles by creating a space for reflection, learning, networking and action-planning with other parents, school or program staff, and key community stakeholders.
Who Can Participate in a Parent Leadership Institute?
Parent Leadership Institutes are geared towards local parent and community needs - and who participates may vary from one community to the next. However, the primary participants are parents with children ages 0-18 who have an interest in developing their capacity to engage on an equal playing field with the systems and staff who serve their children. Other participants may include local service providers who work with families and grassroots leaders.
What Topics are Covered in a Parent Leadership Institute?
The Parent Leadership Institute is a vehicle for building skills and building community. Core topics covered include: understanding family support principles and strategies; leadership techniques for running meetings; understanding and influencing systems; relational meetings and organizing for change. Workshops through the Parent Leadership Institute are planned and developed with local community input, to ensure training topics are reflective of local strengths, needs and interests.
